The 1943 firestorm
Rothenburgsort had its darkest hour in July 1943: Allied bombs almost completely wiped out the industrial district, which was important for the war, in a single night. Thousands of residents were killed in the firestorm. Today, a memorial commemorates the night that was erected on the 60th anniversary of the firestorm.
The monument, conceived by the artist Volker Lang, consists of a scaled-down terrace house, the typical development of the workers' quarters in the district. Inside the house there are reports of contemporary witnesses and fragments of literary texts.
