Rheda Castle is one of the mighty early moated castles in Westphalia, which were also the center of direct imperial rule and underwent the change from fortifications of the Middle Ages to the baroque residence of the sovereign. Protected by the castle, the city of Rheda was founded in the 14th century as the economic center of the small Rheda dominion.
