The von Arnim family is still a landlord in Brandenstein, where they mainly deal with forestry. Only in the years from 1945 to 1992, after its expropriation by the Soviet occupying powers, was the property in foreign hands. The Brandenstein manor house served as a state children's home during this period. In 1992 Bernd von Arnim bought the Brandenstein manor house and the 1250 hectare Brandensteiner Forest back from the district. In the manor house, which was extensively renovated, he set up the forest administration, which has since been one of the largest employers in the region.
