In the years 1414 to 1418 took place in Constance the largest congress of the Middle Ages, the 16th Ecumenical Council for the election of a pope. It was at the same time the only papal election on German soil. Constance was selected because it was a bishopric. In the built from 1388 to 1391 "department store", which is today called "Council" was elected on November 11, 1417 Pope Martin V.
