Embark on the Caen Hill Locks & Diamond Jubilee Wood loop from Devizes, an easy 4.0-mile (6.4 km) hike that takes about 1 hour and 42 minutes to complete. You will gain 243 feet (74 metres) in elevation, experiencing a diverse landscape. The trail leads you along the historic Kennet and Avon Canal, where the impressive Caen Hill Locks, a series of 29 locks, create a dramatic ascent. As you walk, you can watch boats navigate this engineering marvel and enjoy extensive views across the Wiltshire countryside. Later, the route takes you into the peaceful Diamond Jubilee Wood, a maturing woodland with native trees and quiet lookouts. While generally easy, be prepared for some moderate inclines, especially near the locks, and potentially muddy or uneven paths within the wood.
This easy loop is suitable for most fitness levels, offering accessible paths for a pleasant outing. Since the trail combines canal towpaths and woodland trails, it is a good option for a walk in various seasons. However, be aware that some sections in the Diamond Jubilee Wood can become muddy and rough, particularly after rain. Consider wearing appropriate footwear to ensure a comfortable experience on these varied surfaces.
The Caen Hill Locks are a monumental feat of 19th-century civil engineering, recognized as one of the
