Embark on the Mount Ida Trail for a rewarding hike that quickly takes you above the treeline into the alpine tundra. As you ascend, you'll experience continuous panoramic views along the Continental Divide, offering glimpses of the Never Summer Mountains and Mummy Range. This moderate hike covers 2.8 miles (4.5 km) with a significant elevation gain of 1362 feet (415 metres), typically taking about 1 hour and 35 minutes to complete. The route provides a substantial climb without extreme technical difficulty, leading you towards sweeping vistas. You can expect to see distant views of Longs Peak and a garden of alpine lakes, including Inkwell Lake and Azure Lake, from higher elevations.
Plan your visit to the Mount Ida Trail between late June or early July and September or early October, as these are typically the snow-free months. Access to the trailhead is via Trail Ridge Road, which is generally open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Starting your hike early in the day is highly recommended to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, which are common in the mountains. An early start also allows you more time to acclimatize to the high elevation, ensuring a more comfortable experience.
This trail is notable for its continuous exposure to the alpine environment and the chance to spot wildlife. Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep and marmots as you traverse the open tundra. The 12,889-foot summit offers truly expansive 360-degree views, making it a highlight for those seeking grand mountain panoramas. It's a prime example of Rocky Mountain National Park's high-altitude beauty, providing a unique perspective on the surrounding ranges and valleys.
