Embark on a difficult mountain biking loop through Val Duron from Selva di Val Gardena, covering 22.8 miles (36.8 km) with a significant 4789 feet (1460 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 4 hours and 24 minutes. This challenging route offers spectacular Dolomite scenery, transitioning from coniferous forests to expansive meadows with views of iconic peaks like the Rosengarten and Sassolungo. You will navigate primarily gravel roads, unpaved sections, and alpine paths, encountering steep climbs where gradients can reach up to 24% and some sections may require pushing your bike.
This demanding tour requires very good fitness and advanced riding skills, as the terrain includes rough gravel and steep ascents, particularly from the Fassa Valley into Val Duron. While the technical difficulty varies, be prepared for sections that may correspond to STS S3-S6. Along the way, you will find opportunities to rest and refuel at traditional mountain huts such as Rifugio Micheluzzi, Baita Lino Brach, and Zallinger, making for well-deserved breaks during your ride.
Val Duron is considered a natural gem, nestled between major Dolomite mountain groups and offering some of the most fascinating views in the region. Keep an eye out for semi-wild yaks and marmots as you traverse the valley. A memorable and challenging section of this route, including the Passo de Duron / Mahlknecht Joch, is even part of the annual Hero Dolomites race, highlighting its demanding nature and scenic beauty.
