Hiking

Hikes up Fan Brycheiniog place you up in the far north of the Black Mountain range in the Brecon Beacons National Park. This summit sits on an ice cream scoop ridgeline with its neighbours, and is not to be confused with the Black Mountains (note the plural) range in the far east of the national park.

Walking in the Brecon Beacons never gets boring but with many hikers heading to Pen-y-Fan and her retinue, it’s easy to overlook the Black Mountain and all it has to offer. Hiking trails to Fan Brycheiniog, its highest peak, include a section of the Beacons Way, a long distance path that traverses the entire national park. Thanks to the proximity of other Black Mountain tops, you can make your adventure short and sweet or long and luxurious.

Ridgeline rambling

Like much of the Brecon Beacons, Fan Brycheiniog is a hefty, grassy mound of a mountain with a sloping west side and a craggy, steep western flank. The landscape is covered in typical long grass with tracks and trails, allowing you to start your ascent from many places.

Glyntawe, to the south east, is a popular place to begin and you’ll find parking, pubs and campsites here. Starting off steep, you’ll quickly ascend to the ridgeline and hike to Fan Hir. Admire the steep drop to the east and the grassy, gentle flanks to the west. In addition, several trails approach along the ridgeline and valley from the west with more paths meandering from the north.

Hikes up Fan Brycheiniog can be achieved all year round, and a snowy dusting makes for a tremendous experience. Low ground can get boggy, particularly to the south but the ridgeline itself is usually dry and easy-going. From the summit, enjoy sweeping views across south Wales.

    Hiking

The views down onto Llyn Y Fawr from here is pretty spectacular. This is one of the nicest places in the Brecon Beacons to walk along. Once you have put in the effort to get here, the ridge has a good footpath, there's a nice walled shelter and the views down towards the lake is pretty awesome on a good day.
