Cloghernagh Summit

Hiking

5.0

(23)

In Ireland’s majestic Wicklow Mountains, Cloghernagh rises to the east of Lugnaquilla’s impressive bulk and you can ascend both in the same adventure. This mountain tops out at 2,600 feet (800 m) and offers fantastic, far-reaching views in clear weather, particularly over Glenmalure below.

A useful starting point is on Glen Road, immediately east of Cloghernagh. It’s close to Carrywaystick Waterfall, which is well worth seeing. The foot of the mountain is cloaked in conifer forest before you break the treeline and ascend over heather-strewn mountainside. An ascent from this side passes Arts Lough, a particularly pretty high lake surrounded by purple heather blooms in summer.

From the summit, the views across the Wicklows are excellent and looking to the east provides a coastal panorama. Cloghernagh is part of a horseshoe that includes Lugnaquilla so while you can absolutely summit it in isolation, if the weather looks good, the full horseshoe makes for a lovely adventure.

Dogs aren’t allowed on some sections of the mountain as trails cross private farmland so it’s best to leave them at home.

    Hiking

Great views down to Arts Lake and up the valley to Lugnaquillia. The best thing is that the end is in sight!
