    Hiking

Custer State Park rates Sunday Gulch Trail as a strenuous trail, and for good reason. Even though the hike is only about 3 miles long, it's the terrain that makes it demanding and fun at the same time. At some point you have to walk about boulders and, in early summer it's possible, that you have to walk small parts through the water. But once you are down in the gulch, all the above doesn't matter anymore and you will be fascinated by the granite walls and all the little stream crossings.

Embark on the Sunday Gulch Trail, a moderate 4.2 miles (6.7 km) hiking route that takes you through a unique landscape in Custer State Park. You will gain 678 feet (207 metres) in elevation over approximately two hours, winding through towering granite formations and lush ponderosa pines. As you descend into the gulch, you will discover beautiful streams and small waterfalls, creating a distinct atmosphere.

When planning your visit, be aware that the trail features technical sections with rock scrambling and metal handrails. These parts can be slippery, especially if wet or if ice lingers into late spring. You should also expect to encounter wet feet, as the route frequently crosses streams and small waterfalls. Allow yourself ample time to complete this hike, particularly if you are not accustomed to technical terrain.

This loop offers an immersive experience, showcasing incredible rock formations and expansive views of the Black Hills, particularly around Sylvan Lake. The trail's unique character comes from its hands-on sections, where you will navigate through impressive rock walls. It stands out for its blend of scenic beauty and challenging, engaging terrain.
