Lake Knielinger See is supplied with freshwater from the Rhine harbor. The water then flows into the Alb via the Willichgraben. Since 2016, the Federbach stream has been diverted around the lake in a ditch because the lake was in danger of overflowing due to the highly nutrient-rich water of the Federbach stream.

In order to increase the oxygen content of the Knielinger See, an inlet structure was built in the northern area of the Rheinhafenkanal and connected to the southern area of the lake via a meandering canal. This way, nutrient-poor and oxygen-rich Rhine water reaches the Knielinger See.
