The café (including the exhibition there) is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.! It can be reached from Oberkirchen in about 10 minutes on foot via the cycle path in the direction of Westfeld.

The charcoal factory was built in 1878 by the manufacturer Otto Schütte. Official operations began a year later. The former charcoal factory, which the locals still call the “Black Factory”, processed beech charcoal in particular. The coal burned in the surrounding forests was processed into charcoal powder, coal semolina, briquettes and barbecue charcoal. At its peak from 1920 to 1930, over 100 workers worked in the factory. In the last century, the factory also supplied the surrounding towns with self-generated electricity from its own water turbines.
