Slievenamon summit

Hiking

5.0

(22)

County Tipperary’s stunning Slievenamon is not just any mountain: it’s the home of gods. Part of its grandeur is its isolation, rising out of a vast plain and visible for a considerable distance. Its bulk is half wooded, with its upper reaches open moorland.

Ascending Slievenamon is no easy feat but it is a fairly straightforward climb, requiring no technical skills or equipment. Its summit features cairns cloaked in folklore: portals to the Celtic Otherworld, a land of deities. Never remove stones from the cairns, lest you be cursed by the gods that sleep here.

Explore a beautiful mountain with a mythical history

The trails up Slievenamon are mostly clear to follow without many features. The ascent is steep and steady, but the views get better and better, so there’s always a good excuse to stop and have a breather. The terrain is frequently boggy, so waterproof boots are a good idea.

When you reach the summit, you’ll find the summit cairn, said to be home to the god, Bodb Derg. There are other cairns on the hillside and you’ll also find a trig pillar. There are phenomenal views from Slievenamon but as the summit is fairly flat, it’s worth wandering around it to see different vistas.

You can explore Slievenamon all year round although only attempt it in snow or ice if you’re an experienced winter mountaineer. Conditions on the mountain can be harsh and changeable in every season, so always check the forecast and wear appropriate clothes.
