The Merseburg Cathedral of St. John and St. Lawrence is considered one of the most important cathedral buildings in Germany and was the favorite place of the only saintly-spoken imperial couple, Henry II and Kunigunde. None other than Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg, one of the most famous chroniclers of the Middle Ages, laid the foundation stone for the construction of the cathedral on May 18, 1015. At the consecration on October 1, 1021, Emperor Heinrich II was present in person and gave the Merseburg church great gifts.

A cathedral is a sacred building, which always looks imposing and radiates great power and calm in its quiet, stoic grandeur. The Merseburg Cathedral is perhaps not the largest of the cathedral buildings, but - embedded in the cute old town of Merseburg - highly recommended to look at and explore!
