The highest point on the Black Isle peninsula to the north of Inverness, Mount Eagle is one for the hardiest of hikers and those intent on bagging all the Marilyn summits of Britain. This is because hikes to Mount Eagle’s true apex involve awkwardly wading through thick gorse to claim victory at the trig point.
This means that despite the ease of approach, the gentle gradients and the lowly elevation, Mount Eagle is stored alongside the likes of the Cobbler and the Inaccessible Pinnacle in the file of Scottish summits that require a certain amount of gumption when bagging the actual summit.
A hard won and awkward summit amidst extensive undergrowth
Walking routes to Mount Eagle make use of a network of forestry tracks to gradually gain height through an extensive conifer plantation. Near the top is a broadcasting and telecoms transmitting station. This is where the trackless and rather challenging battle with the undergrowth begins, with the hidden trig point guarded by all manner of scratchy gorse a few hundred feet to the north east. It’s not the kind of place that would inspire the kids to go walking again.
Your only reward once you get there is a feeling of satisfaction at having bested the dastardly vegetation, as there is no summit panorama to enjoy. Conifers surround the summit, blocking out any views there would otherwise be towards the sea or Inverness.
Fortrose, with its picturesque ruined cathedral, makes for a good base on the Black Isle but you’ll find more restaurants, cafes, pubs and lodgings in nearby Inverness.
