Tinto Hill Summit Viewpoint

Hiking

5.0

(49)

At 2,333 feet (711 m), Tinto is an eye-catching hill that stands isolated from the rest of the mountainous, Southern Uplands of Scotland. The popularity of this charming summit is two-fold; it’s both a relatively easy hike and provides fantastic views of the Clyde Valley and its eponymous firth on a clear day.

You can choose from several hiking trails up Tinto Hill and its lower peaks with the main track leading from Fallburn. This track is wide and forgiving, which makes it exceptionally popular in the summer and busy on weekends throughout the year. Ascend from the north and you’ll pass Fallburn hill fort, dating back to the Iron Age and with clearly defined ramparts.

A very achievable hike with plenty of flexibility

Tinto Hill draws hikers from miles around to explore its isolated beauty and marvel at the undulating landscape surrounding it. Perhaps because it stands so intriguingly alone, it attracts its fair share of varied attention, being both the subject of a Scots nursery rhyme and the objective of an annual running race.

Hiking to Tinto’s summit is very achievable for most hikers in good weather, including children, thanks to its clear, gentle trail. It’s easy to add on extra peaks too, all of which will be quieter, by heading to Scaut Hill and Lochlyoch Hill.

Tinto’s summit would be difficult to miss, even in thick cloud, due to its vast cairn and trig point. This hill is no stranger to biting winds and poor visibility so, if you find yourself in cloud, take great care as the hill has numerous disused quarries on its slopes.

Wiston and Thankerton are popular starting points while accommodation is plentiful in nearby Biggar and Lanark.

A good summit view, you can see all around. The ascent of this Marilyn is very straightforward, following a good gravel path from the car park to the north.
