The Igreja do Colégio belongs to a Jesuit school and has not been open all day. We were lucky and for the short wait we were rewarded with a huge church splendor in sight!

The Igreja do Colégio, officially the Igreja de São João Evangelista, is one of the most important churches in Funchal, Madeira. It was built by the Jesuits in the 17th century. Its walls and ceilings are decorated with frescoes, gilded wood carvings, and Baroque altars. Of particular note are the choir stalls with their 17th-century blue and white azulejos.
