As part of the 1150th anniversary of the city of Meppen in 1984, a group of committed local friends from the Meppen Local History Association set up a small exhibition on the history of the city of Meppen in two rooms of the former Arenberg Rentei. Plans were drawn up for a permanent exhibition. The house itself is a museum piece: the classicist building was built in 1805 according to plans by August Reinking as a villa for the merchant Ferdinand Frye and was used as a Rentei by the Arenberg Dukes from 1835 onwards.
