    Hiking

Cà San Marco is the former roadman's house on Via Priula, an important commercial artery at the time of the Republic of Venice. In fact, the San Marco pass, a short distance from here, connected (and still connects) Bergamo with Morbegno. Today it is a small mountain hotel.

    Hiking

Built in 1593 to a design by Alvise Priuli, the Cantoniera Cà San Marco was initially born as a roadman's house used to offer refreshment to merchants passing along the Via Priula, heading towards the Canton of Grigioni.

Due to construction defects it had to be completely rebuilt a few years after its inauguration.

As you hike, you will encounter diverse landscapes, from lush meadows to high-altitude terrain, with expansive views of the surrounding valleys. Keep an eye out for the serene Ponteranica Lakes, nestled among craggy peaks, offering a picturesque visual landmark along your journey.

To plan your visit, consider that the best time to hike this stage is typically from May to October, when the mountain refuges are open and snow has receded from the higher elevations. The Passo San Marco - Bivacco Zamboni Loop offers a challenging hike through the beautiful Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche. This difficult route spans 8.8 miles (14.2 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 3024 feet (922 metres), typically requiring about 6 hours and 11 minutes to complete. As you climb, you will be treated to panoramic views of the valley, often seeing the serpentine road leading to Passo San Marco in the distance. The trail itself features a mix of natural paths, steep ascents with wide hairpin turns, and sections with steps carved in stone, guiding you through lush woods and wide, flower-dotted meadows. You will also cross streams and follow parts of the Brembo river, passing a rocky gorge with small waterfalls.

This demanding hike requires very good fitness and sure-footedness, so come prepared. While Rifugio Madonna delle Nevi and Rifugio Balicco provide amenities along the way, Bivacco Zamboni offers more basic facilities like beds, a fireplace, and a gas stove. It is crucial to check for any temporary access restrictions that may apply to the bivouacs and to verify current trail conditions before you head out.

Beyond its natural beauty, this loop also touches upon the ancient Via Priula, adding a historical dimension to your alpine adventure. You might even spot local wildlife such as marmots or chamois during your journey. The varied terrain and historical context make this a rewarding experience for well-prepared hikers looking to explore the rich landscape of the Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche.

Embark on the Via Priula Trail, a moderate hiking route that takes you through diverse terrain, from ancient cobblestone paths to natural trails and mule tracks. As you ascend, the landscape shifts from lush woods to more open, rocky environments, offering views across the Brembana and Bitto Valleys. This hike covers 1.9 miles (3.1 km) with an elevation gain of 513 feet (156 metres), typically taking about 1 hour and 2 minutes to complete. You'll find panoramic vistas of the Rhaetian Alps as you reach Passo San Marco, a true highlight of the journey.

When planning your visit, be aware that while this specific section is moderate, the broader Via Priula Trail can be more challenging. For longer excursions on the wider network, medium mountain equipment is recommended due to significant elevation changes. You should also prepare for steep sections with classic rounded rocks, especially if you are climbing towards Albaredo San Marco. Parking is generally available near the starting points of the various sections of the Via Priula Trail.

This route is part of a historic network with strong ties to the Venetian Republic, offering a glimpse into the region's past. The path is rich in natural beauty, featuring mountains, forests, and pastures that showcase the unique environment of Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche. It provides an excellent opportunity to experience the transition from lush valleys to higher alpine views, making it a notable trail in the area.
