From 1933, the armaments industry was established on Essener Straße (then "Weg 4") - initially the Deutsche Messapparate GmbH, daughter of a Black Forest watch manufacturer. Factory apartments were needed for this company, and the residential complex known as the Black Forest settlement was built.

During the Nazi period from 1936, a secret armaments industry was located on the Am Ochsenzoll site, which was declared as a watch factory. In addition to many forced laborers, skilled workers were also employed here. Based on the clock production, which took place for a Black Forest company, the Black Forest settlement was built in the style of the homeland.

If you walk through the settlement on Essener Straße, you feel like you are in a Black Forest village. Gable roofs, half-timbered gables with pointed floors and whitewashed, white brick walls dominate the picture in the Black Forest settlement. The 180 apartments were built from 1939 onwards for workers from the southern German company Junghans, who worked for the weapons industry in Langenhorn. The buildings are now listed buildings.
