Founded in 1128 by the Bishop of Winchester William Giffard, Waverley Abbey was the first Cistercian abbey in England. The abbey was in use until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536, when it was then mostly demolished.
Today, you can visit the impressive remains such as the 13th-century vaulted refectory dining hall. The abbey is run by English Heritage and entrance is free. You can find out more, here: english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/waverley-abbey

Waverley abbey was the first monastery founded in Britain by the reforming Cistercian religious order. A small group of French monks settled in this beautiful spot in 1128 and Waverley became the springboard for Cistercian settlement in southern England.
There is no entrance fee to visit the abbey and you can walk amongst the ruins at will. A café has recently popped up in nearby Waverley Abbey House and is open Fri-Sun from 10:00-17:00 until 29 August.
