A prominent and noble giant of the Northern Fells of the Lake District, there are many superb walking routes to Skiddaw. Its gentle slopes are ideal for a first foray into the higher mountains, whilst the variety of approaches reward repeat visits to this grand summit.

Hikes to Skiddaw take you onto the oldest mountain massif in the Lake District. It’s a mountain characterised by steeply sloping flanks of grass and heather, with loose slate on its upper ramparts. Nowhere is it technically difficult.

An ancient, noble and beautiful mountain

Skiddaw is a simply sensational viewpoint, its position as the region’s highest northern bastion gives it an unparalleled panorama. The mountains of the Lake District fill the southern horizon, probably seen best from Skiddaw Little Man, where you can gaze right into the dramatic jaws of Borrowdale. To the north, beyond the sparkling Solway Firth rise the wild Southern Uplands of Scotland.

Hikes to Skiddaw can take in any number of subsidiary Wainwrights, such is the way that the parent peak is thrust up on the shoulders of its family. To the west, Longside Edge represents a fantastic airy ridge walk above Bassenthwaite Lake, whilst Dodd is a great woodland adventure. The secluded upland to the east is known as the Back o’ Skiddaw, where England’s most remote residence, the charming Skiddaw House, can be found. Refreshments and indeed a bed for the night can be sought here.

There are many great bases for adventures up Skiddaw. England’s adventure capital, Keswick, is the most obvious and well-equipped. The villages of Bassenthwaite and Threlkeld also have a host of options. Despite the kindness of the terrain, Skiddaw’s height means that adventures here in full winter conditions are best left to equipped mountaineers.

    Hiking

This northern fell is a beast; a sprawling behemoth of a mountain. What it lacks in intricacy it makes up for with sheer presence. The Back o’ Skiddaw is wild and remote (and home to England’s highest hostel), and its summit, while barren and rocky, presents a phenomenal view of Lakeland to the south.

You're very lucky if you get a clear day with low wind on this Lake District fell but the views are worth it when you do!

    Hiking

Great hike, recommend descending the western side (Dodd wood) for sunsets as there is most visibility.

Skiddaw loop from Keswick — Lake District National Park

    16.4km

    880m

    890m

Embark on a challenging hike up Skiddaw, England's fourth-highest mountain, on this rewarding loop from Keswick. The trail covers 10.2 miles (16.4 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2900 feet (884 metres), typically taking around 5 hours and 53 minutes to complete. You'll follow a well-trodden, stony path, often called the Jenkin Hill Bridleway, which offers a steady gradient through rounded, grassy slopes. As you ascend, you'll experience diverse terrain and expansive panoramic views, including Borrowdale to the south and the wilder "Back o' Skiddaw" area.

This difficult hike requires good fitness, but its accessibility from Keswick makes it a popular choice. You can start directly from the town center, eliminating the need for a car. Be prepared for potentially cold and windy conditions at the summit, even on milder days in the valley, so bring suitable clothing and sturdy footwear. The route is generally straightforward, but the upper sections are exposed to the elements.

Skiddaw is known as a "gentle giant" among the Lake District's higher peaks, offering a manageable yet significant mountain climb. From the summit, you can enjoy unparalleled 360-degree views of the entire Lake District, including Keswick, Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite Lake, and other major fells. The mountain itself is formed from ancient Skiddaw slate, and a circular stone-built wind shelter from 1876 stands at the top, adding a touch of history to your achievement.
