The port is a so-called protective port. When the Elbe is high, boats and ships have the opportunity to avoid the strong current and moor here. The actual smaller port area of Schnackenburg is now protected by large protective/sheet piling walls, some of which can even be closed. A huge flood gate protects the area of the ferry access!
