The Eider, Schleswig-Holstein's longest river, stretches 188 kilometers from its source to its mouth in the North Sea. The river begins in the hilly moraine region south of Kiel, more precisely at the Heickenteich and a small lake on the Schönhagen estate. From there, the Eider winds its way through the state in numerous twists and turns, initially as the Upper Eider, past Rendsburg, where it empties into the Kiel Canal. The river's course is interrupted by the canal but continues westward until it empties into the North Sea near Tönning.

The road bridge at the Kluvensiek lock was originally built as a Dutch bascule bridge. The bridge portals were initially made of wood, but were later replaced by cast iron portals. In 2013, the historic facility was upgraded for tourism with an information pavilion.

THE 6 LOCKS OF THE HISTORICAL EIDER CANAL The historic locks were completed with the Eider Canal in 1784. All locks (with the exception of the Rendsburg lock, which has only one chamber) are identical in construction with a main chamber, the ship lock, which is 35 m long and 7.8 m wide, and a side chamber, the free lock, which is 5 m wide. The structures for regulating the water level based on the Dutch model are a significant engineering achievement.

Groß Nordsee was first mentioned in documents in the 13th century (...) The estate experienced its greatest prosperity under Wilhelm Hirschfeld, (...) a trained farmer from Hamburg, (...) in 1819 he acquired the farm and turned it into a model estate. He introduced crop rotation. (...) Opposite the estate he built himself a burial site, which he called Elysium. Today only a dilapidated ruin indicates its former existence. Source: www.krummwisch.de The burial site is now located in a grove 40 m from the path.
