Once in the region, you shouldn't miss the ramparts. They're worth seeing and a worthwhile detour on your bike tour in Gardelegen. The Gardelegen ramparts are the best-preserved and most complete of their kind in Saxony-Anhalt. Today, a 2.5 km long avenue of linden trees runs around the entire old town center, forming a green ring the likes of which are rarely found in Germany. The complex is part of the tourist and heritage network "Garden Dreams - Historical Parks in Saxony-Anhalt." Further information about the ramparts can be found at: https://www.naturimgarten.at/natur-im-garten-deutschland/schaugaerten-deutschland/schaugarten-de/wallanlagen-gardelegen.html

A true piece of the Middle Ages from the 13th century can be found right next to the Salzwedel Gate. The Gate Mill—an overnight accommodation, inn, and rest stop—was one of the town's most important sources of income at the time and, until the end of the 19th century, the contact point for the surrounding villages to mill grain. The surrounding villages were obligated to have their grain milled here. The mill continued to operate until the second half of the 20th century.
