Founded at the end of the 19th century by Father Buguet, the parish priest of the village, this site has become an essential place of prayer for the deceased. Throughout the year, the sanctuary welcomes thousands of pilgrims from all over the world. Over time, it has become a leading center for all questions concerning the afterlife and eschatology.
Built at the edge of the forest, the Basilica of Our Lady of Liberation of Montligeon, elevated to the status of a minor basilica in 1928, overlooks the surrounding plain with its two spires.

Former Rémalard-Bellou Station

Highlight • Structure

Opened in 1873 to goods and in 1874 to passengers, the railway operated for 110 years. We took the train at 5:53 a.m. in Condé to arrive at 8:49 a.m. in Alençon, after a 20-minute stop in Mortagne. Thirteen stations punctuated the route, including that of Rémalard-Bellou which also had its freight station serving, among other things, the cider house, where the BFC factory has since been established.

In 1934, the red and cream diesel micheline replaced the steam locomotive. The Japanese and the Americans continue to use the line to go in search of Percheron horses.

Then, passenger traffic ceased in 1954. Portions of the lines were still used until the 1980s by companies along the route. Since June 2010, the old railway line has become the Voie Verte.

Built from the 11th century around a castle, at the crossroads of two major thoroughfares, Longny-au-Perche owed its prosperity to the iron industry and trade. The city keeps the memory and presents a typical Percheron homogeneous building, of quality, crossed by three rivers and dominated by the spiers of its church and its chapel, jewel of the Renaissance.
The Notre-Dame-de-Pitié chapel is one of the most beautiful Renaissance chapels in Perche. Built at the top of an impressive flight of steps on the way out of the town, on the road which connects Longny to Mortagne, it is a high place of pilgrimage for the whole of Perche and visited by many English people.
There is a good climb there to go towards Mortagne and from the neighboring cemetery a view of the whole town of Longny.

The construction of the monastery on this site began in 1170. Of course, like many other religious buildings, it was demolished during the revolution, unfortunately after being rebuilt shortly before. Of the building built after the revolution, only the pharmacy, the gatehouse and the chapel remain. Unfortunately it is now privately owned, but the lake and house, in a beautiful setting, are a must see.

I am delighted to see and see again the basilica of "La chapelle Montligeon" and I am proud to have been the doctor of this charming village. In the year 2000 and following after 40 years of general medicine in Paris. R.G. Dean of the "couch of doctors".

From very humble beginnings, a significant sanctuary with a very unusual patronage has emerged in La Chapelle-Montligeon, one I've never encountered anywhere else: The church here, with the papal distinction of "Basilica Minor," is not one of the usual churches dedicated to Our Lady, but rather specifically to "Our Lady, the Liberator of Souls in Purgatory." The present pilgrimage church was built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as the previous building had become far too small for the pilgrims who came here.

Praying for your deceased is more than necessary. If you don't pray for yours, pray for mine. 🙏🏻😇

Before, this place was so unsanitary that the villagers called it the valley of the devils. Monks of the Carthusian order settled and transformed this place so much that they renamed it the "ValDieu". That was before. Now, when modern man transforms his environment, it is to pollute it. I can't wait for the wisdom of the monks to be rediscovered! 🙏🏻😇

Among all the villages in the region, Bellême is undoubtedly one of the most charming. No wonder it was the capital of the ancient county of Perche. Wandering through the medieval atmosphere of its streets is a delight.
