From the old train station in Bengtsfors, you can get some exercise on a handcar along the disused railway line towards Arjäng. 😜 A historic rail bus also runs to Mellerud in the summer. Timetable at: www.dvvj.se

Situated 150 metres above sea level, Lake Ärtingen covers an area of 2.65 square kilometres and reaches a depth of 21.5 metres. It is part of the Viskan drainage system and is fed by the small river Munkån, about 3 kilometres long, which connects Ärtingen to the nearby lake Öresjö.

Halden is a pleasant town located right on the Iddefjord, close to the Swedish border. Its most prominent feature is the historic Fredriksten Fortress situated on a hill overlooking the town and water. In town, you can find nice streets and a harbourside area worth a stroll.

Fredriksten Fortress is Norway's largest and most important border fortress. It towers impressively over slag heaps and is visible from far away. The fortress was besieged several times but never taken and played an important role in Norway's independence. The complex is well worth seeing and offers various tours (e.g. ghost tour) at the information desk/café. All information boards are in Norwegian and English. Some paths are more difficult to walk, sturdy shoes are recommended.
