The locks of Sjötorp form the spectacular western gateway to the Göta Canal, right on the shores of the massive Lake Vänern. As the historic starting and ending point of the famous "Blue Ribbon of Sweden," the small village of Sjötorp marks the place where the gigantic excavation work for the canal began in 1810. The local facility comprises a total of eight historic locks, which overcome a height difference of over 20 meters and were built between 1816 and 1822. The eight lock sections in Sjötorp all have their own unique character and bear traditional, ceremonial names, some of which are based on the four historic estates of Sweden: Lock 1 ("The Constitution"): Located directly at the harbor basin, this sea lock forms the direct "gateway" to Lake Vänern and has a drop of 2.9 meters. The charming lock keeper's cottage from 1857 now serves as a ticket office for visitors. Double locks 2–3 and 4–5: These paired lock staircases bear the names Adeln (Nobility), Prästerna (Clergy), Bönderna (Peasantry), and Handeln (Burghers). The double lock 4–5 alone overcomes a drop of 4.8 meters. Lock 6: This single lock (2.4-meter drop) is distinguished by a unique, masonry lock keeper's house made of natural stone, which likely dates back to the 1810s and is one of the oldest on the entire canal. Locks 7–8: Another pair of locks that continues the ascent or descent of boats towards the nearby village of Norrkvarn. Sjötorp transforms into a lively excursion destination, especially in the summer months. Here, you can watch the skippers and lock keepers at close range as they perform their fine handiwork while the water rises and falls in the basins.

Experience the old railway lines in a different way. The route to Skagersvik is my personal favorite.

Second to last shelter before Lake Vänern. The last shelter is located directly at the mouth.

Funny how the jetty is besieged by ducks.

Large lifting bridge for road traffic. If I understood correctly, it only becomes active in certain, rare time windows.
