Bothmer Castle in Klütz is the largest Baroque palace complex in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. An architectural masterpiece with English flair and a fascinating history. The three-wing Baroque complex, with Anglo-Dutch influences, was built between 1726 and 1732 for Count Hans Caspar von Bothmer, advisor to the English king. The Festonallee – a linden avenue – is a magnificent garden monument. After the Second World War, the building was used as a retirement home in the GDR and reopened as a palace museum in 2015 after extensive renovation. A visit to Bothmer Castle is like a journey into the world of the 18th century – with a touch of London in northern Germany.

The festoon avenue of Bothmer Castle is one of the most famous sights in all of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A stroll through the castle is a particularly impressive way to experience the interplay between baroque architecture and landscape planning. So don't miss the opportunity to walk through the 270-meter-long sunken path. When you then approach the castle grounds, the flanking trees initially only reveal the magnificent central axis of the main building. With each step, the field of vision expands bit by bit. When you finally reach the courtyard of honor, the splendor of the building can no longer be taken in at a glance. It is a prime example of baroque staging that still has its full effect after 300 years and makes a visit to Bothmer unforgettable at any time of year.

Just four kilometers south of the Baltic Sea, Bothmer Castle is located in the middle of an idyllic park. It owes its existence to the adventurous life of one man: Count Hans Caspar von Bothmer. Having reached the peak of his career, the count lived in London - in the legendary 10 Downing Street. From there, he had the magnificent complex built in the Klützer Winkel from 1726 onwards, thus bringing a piece of England to Mecklenburg.

The museum is worth seeing. It tells very clearly not only the history of the castle but also that of Hans Caspar von Bothmer. The audio guide provides additional information to the texts on the panels in the rooms.

Great complex, which can mostly only be viewed from the outside. The café, shop and small museum allow you to catch a glimpse. The other buildings are apparently only available for events.
