Upon entering the grounds, you will immediately discover the magnificent historic Arcen Castle on your left. It was built in the mid-17th century by order of the Dukes of Guelders on the remains of an earlier castle. The current castle dates back to the Baroque period, a stylistic period characterized by lush forms, expressiveness, and the pursuit of splendor and grandeur. In the 19th century, a devastating fire destroyed the castle's symmetry, destroying its entire left wing. Although part of this wing was rebuilt in 1888, the original U-shape was never fully reconstructed. From the beginning of the 16th century until the 1930s, the castle changed hands several times. The last resident, Professor Deusser, left the castle with his family in 1931. In 1976, the castle was given a new lease of life when the Limburg Landscape Foundation acquired the Arcen estate and its historic buildings, including the then-dilapidated castle. It's a shame that the surrounding area is so industrial. It's really weird where our Dutch neighbors are putting their huge factories.

A stark contrast between industrial surroundings and leisure activities. You'll always pass by here when passing through Wasum; it's unavoidable.

The Leukermeer is a quarry lake now open to tourism, located directly outside the "De Maasduinen" National Park and connected to the Meuse River.
