It doesn't happen often, but because the controls are handled by the passing skipper, it can take a long time...get out of the boat, open the bridge, return to the boat ⛵, sail on, back to the bridge and close it...

From Warboys airfield, ND357 departed on 14 January 1944 at 16:45 towards Braunschweig, Germany. After the bombing, the aircraft was shot down on the return flight by the Messerschmitt Bf 110G of Oberleutnant Dietrich Schmidt, who was operating from Leeuwarden. From the east, the burning bomber flew low over Kolhorn, between the church and the then primary school. The Lancaster crashed at 20:35 in the ditch, almost against the dike. The bomber had a very experienced crew on board. Five crew members had one or more awards and six had completed more than thirty missions. Mansfield and Alexander even more than fifty missions. The entire crew was killed and lies at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery near Bergen op Zoom. Five are buried together in one grave.

The Vickers bomber had taken off from East Wretham airfield at 22:01 on the evening of 11 April 1942. The target of this mission was the city of Essen. The crew came from what was then Czechoslovakia. The aircraft was shot down by a German night fighter at 00:23 on the way there. Oberleutnant Helmut Lent was responsible for this. He had taken off from Leeuwarden airfield. The aircraft flew through the air in flames, after which it crashed on the Molenweg. All six crew members were killed. They were all buried at the Military Cemetery of Honour in Huisduinen. They now lie in a collective grave at the British Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery near Bergen op Zoom.
