1933-1945 The Emsland Camps - The National Socialists and their henchmen set up a total of 15 concentration, penal and prisoner of war camps in the Emsland region. Twelve of them are located in the area of today's Emsland district, three in the Grafschaft Bentheim district. Thousands of people were held in the camps, including numerous "political prisoners" who stood in the way of the National Socialists enforcing their rule. The construction of the Emsland camps took place in three phases that overlapped in time: 1933-1936 Establishment and guarding of concentration camps by the SS (Börgermoor, Neusustrum, Esterwegen) 1934-1945 Penal camps under the supervision of the justice administration (Aschendorfermoor, Börgermoor, Rhede-Brual, Walchum, Neusustrum, Oberlangen, Esterwegen, Versen, Fullen) 1939-1945 Prisoner of war camps of the Wehrmacht High Command (Oberlangen, Wesuwe, Versen, Fullen, Groß Hesepe, Dalum, Wietmarschen, Bathorn, Alexisdorf) Hardly anything of the former Emsland camps can be seen on site. At the locations of the former camps, information boards now provide information about the history of each camp. A very beautiful natural landscape with lots of small lakes and moors, moors, moors A little difficult to ride with a normal bike with narrow tires...with my touring bike and wide tires and the 3rd gear of the Rohloff it was just about possible. But every drop of sweat was worth it.

This unique nature reserve is located south of the Esterwegen coastal canal. It consists of former raised bogs that have now been partially rewetted. In between you will find grassland and fallow areas where rare and endangered animals and plants thrive. If you like, you can hike a little further into the moor on the moor adventure trail.

The neo-Gothic church was completed in 1897. The construction time was only two years. Inside you will find a baptismal font from the 13th century and a sandstone slab on the outer choir wall can be assigned to the St. John's Monastery that used to stand at this location.

At the village square you will also find, among other things, the local museum. Here, the local history is shown in permanent exhibitions with exhibits, some of which date from the 13th century. However, plan your visit well, because it is currently only open on Sundays in the summer months from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. (https://www.emsland.com/urlaub/denkenswertes/details/heimatmuseum-esterwegen).
