In the river's source area, there was the village of Kinzig, which no longer exists today and is mentioned in 815 as „Chirizichheimero“. The village and the river were often confused by the monastery scribes of that time with „Chizzicha“ (today Bad Kissingen), which were all described as being located in the Saalegau.
