The Vault Ledger This stone came from the floor of the chancel of Baddesley Clinton church, where it covered the Ferrers family vault. 12 generations of Ferrers are buried there, from Sir Edward Ferrers who died in 1535 and was the first member of the family to live at Baddesley Clinton, to the Edward Ferrers who died in 1830, father of Marmion Edward Ferrers, the last direct lineal descendant of Sir Edward to hold Baddesley. A replica was placed in the church in 1967, as this original stone was becoming worn.

Hiking further afield

This corner of Warwickshire is largely rural with the towns of Royal Leamington Spa and Wawick to the east and Redditch to the west. This is the land of the historic Forest of Arden, a vast region of woodland during Shakespeare’s time. While the majority of the forest is now farmland, you can still see where he found his inspiration in the whimsical pockets of woodland that remain.

Hikes in Baddesley Clinton’s surroundings will take you along hedgerows and across farmland to Kenilworth Castle, through the wetlands at Marsh Lane Nature Reserve and along the River Avon near Warwick.

Trekking through the seasons

The best hiking trails around Baddesley Clinton are walkable throughout the year but anything off road is likely to get muddy in wet periods. As long as you’ve got solid walking boots, a careful tread and an adventurous spirit, muddy winter walks will reward you with beautiful views and crisp mornings.

Spring turns the hedgerows and woodlands here into flower factories, exploding blossoms appearing everywhere. Late spring gives you a good chance of spying ducklings whizzing about on the canals and in summer the woodlands are in full swing.

Autumn is the season where you’ll be using up your camera battery in a single walk as the colours turn golden and mist sits on the fields. Whatever time of year you visit will have its own splendour so you might just have to keep coming back to experience every season.
