An unbelievable amount of VERY old trees - I‘ve never seen something like this before. Amazing especially at dusk. Then it is nearly magical!

It's a dead end for roadies as there's only one tarmacked road to it but it's a nice ride and there's the Tinto Café horsebox at the car park, which does hot drinks, sandwiches and toasties, cakes and snacks. Officially it closes at 4pm but it was still serving at 4.30 when I was there, thankfully.

A sprawling 3,700-acre (1,500 ha) mixed woodland, Rendlesham Forest is owned and managed by Forestry England. There are plenty of trails here for walkers and cyclists, with picnic spots and sculptures to discover. Rendlesham Forest is famous for a supposed UFO sighting in December 1980. There's even a UFO trail, boasting a large model of an alien spacecraft.

Staverton Park, Suffolk, ‘a famous and awesome place of Tolkienesque wonder and beauty’, and ‘one of the best-preserved uncompartmented medieval parks’. Oliver Rackham, The History of the Countryside, 1986. It's also the location of the 'Lunch Tree' in the detectorists, magical.

Yes, the area is well-suited for circular hikes. Many trails are designed as loops, starting and ending in convenient locations like Butley. This allows you to explore diverse landscapes such as the heathland near the former RAF base on the MoD Woodbridge loop from Butley and return to your starting point without retracing your steps.
Most trails in the Wantisden area are suitable for walking with dogs, especially in open spaces like Rendlesham Forest and the surrounding heathlands. However, always be mindful of local signage, particularly concerning wildlife during nesting seasons or when livestock is present. It's recommended to keep dogs on a lead in sensitive areas.
Definitely. The region offers several gentle walks perfect for families. A great option is the Hiking loop from Butley, which is a relatively short and flat trail. The paths in Rendlesham Forest are also generally well-maintained and provide an engaging environment for younger walkers.
The UFO Trail is a unique walking route within Rendlesham Forest that follows the story of alleged UFO sightings in December 1980. The trail is marked and includes informational posts about the event, culminating at a sculpture representing the described alien craft. You can explore it on the Rendlesham Forest UFO Trail – Rendlesham UFO Sculpture loop from Butley.
Rendlesham Forest features a mix of well-maintained gravel paths, sandy tracks, and woodland trails. Most of the main routes are firm and accessible year-round. However, some smaller paths can become muddy after heavy rain, so waterproof footwear is always a good idea.
For walks exploring Rendlesham Forest, the main car park is at the Rendlesham Forest Centre (Tangham, IP12 3NF), which has ample space and facilities. For routes starting closer to Butley, there is typically on-street parking available, but be sure to park considerately.
Reaching the trailheads by public transport can be challenging as Wantisden is a rural parish. Bus services to nearby villages like Butley or Orford are limited. It is best to check local bus timetables in advance. Most visitors find it more convenient to travel by car.
