The church is one of the oldest in northern Upper Palatinate and was consecrated in 1124. In the choir there are remains of late Gothic wall paintings that were whitewashed for centuries and only partially uncovered again in the 20th century. They depict rare scenes from the life of Saint Giles, the original patron saint of the church. The views of the town in one of the pictures are interesting: they probably show Leuchtenberg Castle and the town of Altenstadt with the church and the ring of walls. Also worth seeing are numerous artistic epitaphs. The Simultaneum was introduced in Altenstadt in 1654. To this day, Protestants and Catholics use the church together. It is located on Route 9 of the Simultaneum cycle path.
