August 22, 2025, Portstewart Strand from St. Patrick's Well

Portstewart Strand is a sweeping two-mile beach at the edge of town and forms a fitting finale (or start!) to the Causeway Coast Way. The viewpoint is from St. Patrick’s Well, a small spring long associated with local tradition.

It was a library, a retreat, a memorial to a somewhat scandalous love story and now it is one of the most popular and photographed buildings in Ireland.

Mountsandel Fort is a prehistoric fort dating to the Mesolithic period that was reused in the Irish Middle Ages (10th to 11th centuries). Located in Coleraine, County Derry, the fort consists of a huge grassy mound hollowed out in the middle, overlooking the River Bann. A must-see for lovers of mysterious monuments!

Great cafe just off the cliff path.

Lovely big wide windswept beach with fabulous views to Mussenden Temple (Downhill) and across to Donegal. You can take your car on to the beach (NT charges apply) or park in Portstewart and walk round the cliff path.

The house you see was built in the 18th century A tremendous fire destroyed the house in 1851, and the library, along with numerous important sculptures and paintings, was lost. The house remained in the Bishop's family until 1948.

Built as a library for an eccentric bishop, this dramatic folly atop a cliff is one of Ireland's most popular landmarks.

Yes, the area is well-suited for families. Most of the trails are rated as easy, focusing on flat coastal paths and gentle woodland walks. A great option is the Portstewart Strand loop from Portstewart, which is a short walk along a stunning sandy beach, perfect for all ages.

Can I bring my dog on the trails?

Many trails in the Ringrash More area are suitable for hiking with a dog, especially the open spaces along the coast and through local forests. However, always be mindful of local regulations. Some areas, like beaches or nature reserves, may require dogs to be on a leash, particularly during bird nesting seasons. It's best to check signage at the trailhead.

What is the scenery like in this region?

The scenery is defined by its coastal beauty and lush river valleys. You can expect to see dramatic cliffs, wide sandy beaches like Portstewart Strand, and the tranquil banks of the River Bann. Hikes on Binevenagh Mountain offer panoramic views over Lough Foyle and the surrounding countryside.

Are there any circular walks available?

Absolutely. Many routes are designed as loops so you can start and end in the same place without retracing your steps. For a walk that combines coastal scenery with a stop for refreshments, consider the Portstewart Strand – Lost & Found Café loop from Portstewart.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Ringrash More?

The trails are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. Hikers often praise the stunning coastal views, the variety of landscapes from beach to forest, and the well-maintained paths suitable for different fitness levels.

How many hiking trails are there in the Ringrash More area?

There are over 50 hiking routes to explore around Ringrash More. The vast majority are easy walks, with a good selection of moderate trails and one difficult route for those seeking a challenge.

Where can I find information about the history of the area?

The region is rich in history. A key site is Mountsandel Wood, home to the earliest known human settlement in Ireland. A walk here takes you to Mountsandel Fort, an ancient earthen structure. You can find more details on its significance from the Department for Communities at their heritage site page.

What is the best time of year to hike here?

Hiking is possible year-round, but the best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn (May to September). During these months, the weather is generally milder and drier, the days are longer, and the coastal wildflowers are in bloom. Always check the weather forecast before you go, as conditions can change quickly.

Is it possible to get to the trailheads using public transport?

Yes, some trailheads are accessible via public transport. The towns of Portstewart and Coleraine are well-serviced by buses and trains, providing access to coastal paths and the trails at Mountsandel Wood. Parking is available at the start of many popular trails. Portstewart Strand famously allows parking directly on the beach, though a fee may apply. For forest parks like Mountsandel Wood, there are usually designated car parks near the entrance. It's always a good idea to arrive early on weekends and holidays as spots can fill up quickly.

Are there any good pubs or cafes to visit after a hike?

Yes, the nearby towns of Portstewart and Coleraine offer plenty of options for a post-hike meal or drink. You'll find a variety of traditional pubs, cozy cafes, and restaurants to relax in after your walk.

What kind of footwear is recommended for hiking in Ringrash More?

For the flat, sandy beach walks and gentle forest paths, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is sufficient. If you plan to tackle the steeper, more rugged terrain of Binevenagh Mountain or trails that can be muddy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip are highly recommended.
