In Egling an der Paar, a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Landsberg am Lech, there is the Catholic parish church of St. Vitus. This church stands on a hill above the town center and is considered one of the most important country churches of the late 18th century in southern Bavaria. History The original parish church was built in 1443. After the church tower collapsed in 1767, the church was rebuilt in 1768 under the supervision of the master builder Franz Anton Kirchgrabner. On June 11, 1783, Whit Wednesday, the new church was consecrated by the auxiliary bishop of Augsburg, Johann Nepomuk von Ungelter. Architecture and furnishings The nave is a replica of the Ettal Rotunda and shows baroque dynamism. The Elector of Bavaria's court painter Christian Wink created magnificent ceiling frescoes between 1773 and 1779, depicting the martyrdom of St. Vitus. The church has five altars: the high altar, the cross altar, the guardian angel altar, the captivity altar and the St. Anne altar. The holy water fonts at the entrances come from old graves. Other churches and chapels In addition to St. Vitus, there are other sacred buildings in Egling an der Paar: • St. Blasius: A small chapel in the late Romanesque style, first mentioned in documents in 1170 and thus the oldest building in the town. • St. Ulrich: Another chapel in the town, which is also of historical importance. These churches and chapels bear witness to the rich religious and cultural history of the municipality of Egling an der Paar.
