Absolutely overrated. Many trees have been broken or cut down. Completely overcrowded during normal daytime. You really don't have to go there...only if it's on your way.

This is the best preserved court tomb in the Causeway Coast area. A Neolithic tomb dating from c.4000 to 2000 BC. It was excavated twice, in 1935 and 1975. It consists of a horse shoe shaped forecourt that leads into a small chamber. There is a cremation passage behind the chamber containing three pits, one of these pits held the remains of several people. This form of cremation passage is the only one of its type found in Ireland.

This iconic moody avenue of beech trees was planted by the Stuart family in the eighteenth century. Two centuries later, the trees remain a treat and are one of the most photographed natural phenomena in Northern Ireland. Most recently used as a film location in Game of Thrones.

Stumble along the flowing Gleneshk River in the beautiful Breen Forest in County Antrim. The river is a refreshing oasis and great place to sit down and picnic before continuing on your journey.

Are there any challenging hikes for experienced walkers?

While many routes are easy, the area does offer demanding treks. The landscape, particularly within Breen Forest and on the Moyle Way, includes steep climbs, remote upland moorland, and boggy terrain that can challenge even seasoned hikers. The main difficult route is the Breen Forest loop, which covers over 13 miles and involves significant elevation gain.

The terrain is quite varied. You can expect a mix of well-defined forest tracks through ancient oak woodlands, open hillsides covered in heather, and boggy sections on the upland heath. Some paths, especially in Breen Oakwood, can be steep and uneven, so sturdy, waterproof footwear is recommended.

Are dogs allowed on the hiking trails?

Dogs are generally welcome on public rights of way, but they should be kept on a lead, especially near livestock or in nature reserves to protect wildlife. Is it possible to get to the trailheads using public transport?

Tobernagola is a rural area, and public transport options are limited. Accessing most trailheads, particularly those in Breen Forest, is easiest by car. If relying on public transport, you would likely need to take a bus to a nearby town like Ballycastle or Armoy and then arrange for a taxi to the start of your hike.

Where can I park for hikes in this region?

There is a designated car park at the entrance to Breen Oakwood Nature Reserve, which is a convenient starting point for several walks in the forest. For other routes, parking is often available in small lay-bys or informal roadside spots near the trailheads. Always park considerately, ensuring you do not block access for local residents or farm traffic.
