The Aschaffenburg collegiate church has a very unusual double patronage: the church was consecrated to "Saint PETER and Saint ALEXANDER" (according to the parish website, this is unique not only in Germany, but worldwide). Peter (in German also Peter, the word means "rock") was called by Jesus Christ to succeed him. In the Catholic understanding of office, he is considered the first pope in the church's almost two thousand year history. Very few people, however, will know of Saint Alexander. We can find a depiction of him in the Roman patriarchal basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls: there is a long gallery with pictures of all the popes. Alexander is considered the 5th successor, and his term of office would have been from 105 to 115. But why two popes were given the patronage of this church is not explained there.
