The upper gate tower was built as part of the fortifications in the 15th century. Renaissance hood around 1540. Market tower keeper's apartment until the beginning of the 20th century. The majority of the curtain walls were demolished shortly after 1800.

The place was first mentioned around the year 1000. In 1308, Vilsbiburg was first named as a market and city at the same time, so it already had market and city rights back then. After 1340 only the term market remained. In 1648 more than half of the population fell victim to the plague. In 1760 the administration of the Geisenhausen care office was transferred to Vilsbiburg. It belonged to the Rentamt Landshut of the Electorate of Bavaria and had a market court with municipal rights. In 1803 it received part of the Teisbach district court with Frontenhausen. In the course of administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality came into being with the municipal edict of 1818.
