From 1177, a collateral line of the Babenbergs lived in the castle. It was originally intended as a widow's seat for Theodora, a niece of the Byzantine Emperor Flavius Manuel I. After the death of Henry the Younger (1236), the property returned to the main line of the Babenbergs. The castle only survived until 1529, when it became a victim of the flames during the first Turkish siege of Vienna. In 1556, it completely burned down due to a lightning strike. The castle was then left to decay and used as a source of material for houses in the Klausen.
