For the light festival the Parterre was changed into a light spectacular in keeping with the illuminated house. Waddesdon is famous for its Carpet Bedding and every spring and summer we change the design of the beds on the Parterre and on either side of the South Fountain. A French-inspired formal garden, a parterre is made up of a symmetrical pattern of beds set off by mown grass and contained by neat pathways and low clipped hedges. Usually designed to be seen from above, in our case from the raised terrace and the main reception rooms and bedrooms on the south side of the Manor. In the centre sits a magnificent fountain, originally made for an Italian palace in Colorno. The parterre was restored in 1994 to designs by Beth Rothschild. In 2000 Waddesdon won the Europa Nostra award for βthe extraordinary re-creation with modern techniques of a major Victorian gardenβ.

PERSPECTIVE: "a way of thinking about or viewing something" The concept of Perspective is immersive reflection. Everywhere you look, a different image point of yourself appears within the space. Move around the space to experience different perspectives exploring the interplay of light and form as you become part of the artwork.

FLOW: "to move along in a stream from one place to another" While our journey through life is never along the straight line we might expect, the destination is ultimately unaffected by the journey. Flow represents this winding path in light.

Yes, the area around Ashendon is well-suited for circular walks. The network of footpaths allows for a variety of loops through the rolling hills and open pastures of the Aylesbury Vale, catering to different fitness levels and time commitments.
Many trails in the area are great for walking with dogs, but be prepared for stiles and livestock. The Dog Lift Stile loop from Chearsley is a moderate 5.6-mile (9 km) route that specifically highlights a feature to help get your dog over a fence, but always keep your dog under control, especially when crossing fields with sheep.
For a shorter, accessible walk that's good for the whole family, consider the Waddesdon Manor β Waddesdon Manor Collections loop from Westcott. It's a gentle walk of about 1.9 miles (3 km) that explores the area near the famous estate, making it an enjoyable outing for all ages.
For a full day of hiking, the Waddeston Estate to Chearsley circular is a challenging 15.2-mile (24.4 km) route. It offers a comprehensive tour of the landscape, passing through the grounds of Waddesdon Estate and connecting to the village of Chearsley.
The mix of farmland, woodland, and hedgerows supports a variety of wildlife. Keep an eye on the sky for red kites, which are often seen soaring overhead. The nearby Bernwood Forest is particularly important for butterflies, and in spring and summer, the meadows are full of wildflowers.
Many routes connect the picturesque villages in the area, several of which have traditional pubs. For example, walks around Chearsley often pass near The Bell pub, offering a convenient spot to rest and have lunch. It's always a good idea to check pub opening times in advance.
Most trails follow public footpaths across open fields, through sections of woodland, and along quiet country lanes. After rain, paths, especially across clay soil fields, can become very muddy and slippery, so waterproof hiking boots with good grip are strongly recommended.
For many of the popular circular walks, hikers park in the nearby villages of Chearsley or Westcott. Please park considerately on the street, being mindful not to block residents' driveways or access points. Some routes may also start near Waddesdon Manor, which has its own parking facilities.
