Tips from the Community

Javi Jaavii
September 5, 2023, Saint James' Church and Cemetery

In this church, you can primarily distinguish two parts: the massive brick tower and the rest of the nave. While the tower dates back to the early 18th century, the older portions of the rest of the church date back to the 12th century.

Although the exact date of the construction of this church is not clear due to the extended time it took to build the original structure, it is estimated to have been in the early 12th century. The church and its churchyard also hold memorials to World War I veterans.

It is at New Mill, Lower Common on the River Blackwater. There used to be a very good restaurant here about 10 years ago.

Great mountain bike route. A little bit of on road but mostly mountain bike territory. Turn by turn description could be slightly better but don't be put off. One part of the ride that advises of guard dogs.....there are, I know I was chased by them so be careful!!.

The road crosses the Blackwater river through a ford, which is often impractical for bicycles as the water level is a little too high. The footbridge is a great alternative and, while narrow, it allows dry and safe passage across the watercourse. Be careful if approaching from the south side of the river as there's a bend on the road and there is gravel on the road which makes it very slippery and dangerous if approached at speed.
