Look for the tranquil course of the Bourne Gutter, slipping to the east of the saddle in White Hill Lane. Here, Culvert Rise marks a source of the Bourne Gutter - aka Hertfordshire Bourne - an occasional tributary of the River Bulbourne, a winterbourne if you will.

The area around Uxbridge Lock was home to various industries, including a flour mill formerly owned by Allied Mills and later by William King.Β William King named the mill "Kingsmill," which is still used as a bread brand.Β

I do like this stretch - the top is pretty, and it is a nice short hill both ways, but the surface is very broken with lots of gravel.

This is a great single track that goes up through Pond Wood, past Longdown Farm, and onwards into Pulpit Wood. It can be muddy in bad weather. It is an established trail though and forms part of the Icknield Way Trail, so beware of hikers and other path users.
