Tips from the Community

Adie
January 28, 2026, Ancient Chestnut Tree

Along the Beech Trail, you'll discover some of the oldest trees on the estate, including Oak and the sprawling limbs of this Horse Chestnut, forming a natural arch over the path.

Great walk, very touristy but it's worth the detour! Be careful of the crowds (on weekends and in summer I dare not imagine!). However, BE CAREFUL, the summit is not accessible, you have to pass the protective barriers which allow the wild nature to be preserved from our steps and from this crowd of people. If we, the Komoot community, start to do this all the tourists will allow themselves and the landscape will never be so beautiful again! (Ps: no need to climb to the top to already see enough in the eyes!)

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any family-friendly hikes near Portbeg?

Yes, the area offers several great options for families. The Ancient Chestnut Tree loop from Enniskillen is an easy 4.7-mile (7.6 km) walk through parkland that's perfect for an afternoon outing. For a coastal experience, the Rougey Cliff Walk in nearby Bundoran is a popular choice with a paved path suitable for strollers, offering fantastic sea views.

What are some good circular walks in the area?

The Florence Court loop is a wonderful circular route. It's a moderate 5.4-mile (8.7 km) trail that takes you through the scenic grounds of the historic Florence Court estate.

Can I take my dog on the trails around Portbeg?

Many trails in the wider region are suitable for dogs, but rules can vary. Forest parks like Ards Forest Park often have designated trails where dogs are welcome on a lead. For estate walks or farmland, always check local signage for specific restrictions, as livestock may be present. It's best practice to keep your dog on a lead to protect wildlife and respect other trail users.

Are there any challenging mountain hikes for experienced walkers?

For a more demanding day out, the Cuilcagh Mountain from Caran Road hike offers a rewarding challenge. This 8.1-mile (13.1 km) route involves a significant ascent over upland terrain. For an iconic climb, the trail up Benbulben in County Sligo provides spectacular views from its famous flat top.

What are the best coastal walks accessible from Portbeg?

Portbeg is perfectly located for exploring the Donegal coastline. The West End walk, part of the larger Rougey Cliff Walk, is right on your doorstep and offers dramatic sea views. For a truly wild Atlantic experience, a trip to the majestic Slieve League cliffs is a must; they are some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe and offer unforgettable hiking.

Are there any waterfall hikes in the region?

While this guide focuses on coastal and mountain trails, the broader region is home to some beautiful waterfalls. A short drive can take you to places like Glencar Waterfall in County Leitrim, which is famous for its connection to the poet W.B. Yeats. Glenveagh National Park also features numerous streams and tumbling waterfalls throughout its rugged landscape.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Portbeg?

The trails are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.5 stars. Hikers often praise the variety of options, from the gentle, well-maintained paths in places like the Benbulben Forest Walk to the more rugged and wild coastal scenery.

How can I get to the trailheads using public transport?

Towns like Bundoran and Sligo are served by Bus Éireann, connecting them to major cities. From these hubs, you can often use local taxi services to reach specific trailheads. However, for more remote routes like those in Glenveagh National Park or up Slieve League, having a car is highly recommended for flexibility and access.

Is there parking available at the main hiking spots?

Most popular, established trailheads have dedicated parking areas. For example, the Benbulben Forest Walk and The Pilgrim Path are known to have parking spots available. However, for more remote or less formal trails, parking might be limited to small lay-bys on the roadside. It's always a good idea to arrive early, especially on weekends.

Are there any easy walks suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. The Ancient Chestnut Tree loop from Castle Coole is a very manageable 2.9-mile (4.7 km) walk on easy terrain. Another excellent option is the Mullaghgarve Mass Rock Walk, which is well-signposted and considered a moderately easy route by most walkers.

What kind of footwear do I need for hiking here?

Footwear depends on your chosen trail. For paved coastal paths like the Rougey Cliff Walk, comfortable walking shoes are fine. For forest trails like the Florence Court House loop from Arney or any mountain routes, sturdy hiking boots with good grip and ankle support are essential. The weather can change quickly, and terrain can be wet and boggy, so waterproof boots are always a wise choice.
