Norwich Castle

Highlight • Castle

Norwich Castle looks very special from the outside. A cube-shaped fortress from the time of the Normans. Today it is a museum that deals with history, but also exhibits works of art.

In addition to visiting a museum, you can also take part in guided tours that show you the most beautiful and exciting corners of the fortress, including the roof, from which you have a breathtaking all-round view of Norwich.

Norwich Castle is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. You can find more information on admission prices, guided tours and exhibitions here: museums.norfolk.gov.uk/norwich-castle

St Peter's Church, Brooke

Highlight • Religious Site

The Tas valley around Shotesham and Stoke holy cross is pleasant cycling. Good walks around the area too. I often go this way then on to the pretty village of Brooke, then the small town of Loddon, after that I’m touring the Norfolk Broads. It’s a nice route and avoids main roads.

Known by the Romans as "the market of the Iceni" (Venta Icenorum) this was one of the strongholds of the Iceni Tribe. It was the centre of the revolt led by Queen Boudicca against the Roman invasion in AD 60/61.

Today the site is one of three major British/Roman towns which has not been built on. Roman embankments and fortifications can be seen today.

Located on the edge of Norwich, Thorpe Marshes is a wonderful mixture of habitats in a nature reserve managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust.

Close to the River Yare, the area is covered in wildflower marshes and dykes. You may spot dragonfly, damselfly and butterfly here, as well as many waterbirds.

Chinese water deer, and smaller Muntjac deer have also taken up residence.

I've ridden Marriotts way many times, and it's a great route. However foolishly I didn't appreciate how muddy many parts of it get when it's been wet.

Impressive fortress that still dominates the centre of Norwich. Now a museum.

Pleasure to ride this mostly continuous path from Aylsham to Norwich (in dry conditions) through changing settings and off-road surfaces

This was a lovely off road bike ride and ideal for families. Unfortunately, ruined by out of control dogs off leads, or if on a lead it is a long lead that is barely visible so is a trip hazard. Lots of dogs jump up at you and chase after livestock. I ride responsibly with regard for other users on this shared path but I will not be riding it again any time soon. It’s a shame as I have used it for many years but I’ve had enough of the large amount of dog walkers who use this trail.

You can't see that much of the marshes from the road but the woods are very pleasant.

Norwich Castle is undergoing major works to restore the floors to their original level of the 12th century so future visitors can truly appreciate what life in the castle was like when it was built. It is still possible to appreciate the royal Norman fortress from the outside.
