P.S. The land owner/farmer has obviously had problems with unauthorised vehicles using this track, because there are now large hay bales installed either side of the ford and in front of nearby farm gates. Access across the stream via the adjacent footbridge is still possible, but don't be disappointed if you wanted to take a run through the ford. P.P.S. The hay bales have now been removed from the ford!

This cafe has now changed management and is called Waffle and Coffee. Still has bike racks and outside seating although I did not see the bike locks last time I was there. Staff still great and the food is even better. Bacon and egg sandwich is very good. Coffee, Tea and cakes and of course waffles. Good clean toilets so well worth visiting as a rest stop.

Fantastic view of Audley End House from Adam Bridge. Audley End is a 17th Century mansion that is known as a prodigy house, meaning that it is extra impressive. Often seen on TV on the likes of Antiques Roadshow, the house used to three times the size, if you can believe it. It's a fabulous view as you cycling past, and worth making a detour out of Saffron Walden for.

Yes, I can vouch for that: a great cycle route between Babraham and Stapleford all year round, although the ford is somewhat deeper in the winter!

Great place to stop for a toastie and coffee - also let us put our bikes inside the cafe to keep our bikepacking stuff safe!

Hildersham and its surroundings are rich in history. You can visit the 13th-century Holy Trinity Church, known for its late-Victorian murals and medieval funerary brasses. The ancient Roman Road, also known as Wool Street, forms the northern boundary of the parish, with evidence of Roman presence found near the church. Further afield, the impressive 17th-century Audley End House is a notable historical site.
Yes, the area offers several options for walking and cycling. The DNA Path Rainbow Cycleway provides an easy route connecting villages to Addenbrookes and the city centre, with access to wooded and stream areas. For a more historical route, the Roman Road (Cambridge to Haverhill) offers a long track with varied terrain, shared with walkers and dog owners. The rolling countryside around Hildersham, with its chalky landscape and the River Granta, is popular for numerous footpaths.
The River Granta meanders through the village, offering picturesque scenery. While Hildersham Wood is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it is private with no public access. However, the wider countryside provides ample opportunities for enjoying nature, with many footpaths and views from higher points like Rivey Hill. The Babraham Ford and Footbridge is another scenic spot along the river.
Families can enjoy the DNA Path Rainbow Cycleway, which is suitable for all ages and offers access to relaxing natural areas. Audley End House is also considered family-friendly, and its associated Audley End Enchanted Railway is a popular attraction for children.
The Waffle (Formerly Bicicletta) cafe is a great option. It's known for its friendly staff, good food including bacon and egg sandwiches, coffee, tea, cakes, and of course, waffles. It also offers bike racks and outside seating, making it a convenient stop for cyclists.
Beyond the main attractions, Hildersham holds several hidden historical gems. The Iron Bridge over the River Granta, built in 1886 by a local blacksmith, is a charming landmark. Burford House, a 17th-century residence, is notable for its Royalist murals that were hidden during Cromwellian times. Hildersham Hall, a Regency stuccoed villa from 1807, also offers historical interest with its park and lake.

The scenic views, especially from places like Adam Bridge towards Audley End House, are also highly valued.
The Roman Road (Cambridge to Haverhill) is a long track that can be challenging. While generally pretty dry, the section after Hildersham road can become a significant mire in autumn and winter, making it difficult even for wider tires. It requires good bike handling skills, especially after long dry periods when ruts can form. It's best to check recent conditions if planning a ride after wet weather.
Beyond the grand Audley End House, Hildersham features the Iron Bridge over the River Granta, a unique structure built by a local blacksmith in 1886. This bridge was a significant improvement over the adjacent ford and is a testament to local engineering from that era.
The rolling countryside around Hildersham is enjoyable throughout the year, but spring and summer offer the most pleasant conditions for walking and cycling, with milder weather and blooming flora. Autumn provides beautiful foliage, though some trails, like the Roman Road, can become muddy after rain. Winter can be picturesque, but be prepared for colder, potentially wet conditions on trails.
