This area has suffered coastal erosion and the path no longer exists in areas, if the tide was high you have to walk inland like I did around the boating lake. No signs explaining what is happening, the path sign does point inland then a sign after indicates walking route.

Nice location by a little green square. There's a decent cafe opposite as well.

Yes, West Mersea is generally a dog-friendly destination. Many trails, especially those through Cudmore Grove Country Park, are popular with dog walkers. However, you'll be walking through sensitive coastal habitats and nature reserves, so it's important to keep your dog under control, especially around wildlife and grazing livestock. Always check local signage for specific lead requirements.
Absolutely. The area's flat terrain makes it great for families. For a shorter, manageable walk, consider the Mersea Island Beach Huts – Mersea Island loop from East Mersea. It's a gentle walk of about 3.7 km that offers lovely coastal views and a chance to see the famous beach huts.
Yes, many of the popular routes are designed as circular or loop walks, allowing you to start and finish in the same place without retracing your steps. This is ideal for exploring the island's diverse scenery, from coastal paths to inland fields. All the top routes highlighted in this guide are loops.
Many walks can be planned to include a stop at a pub. A good option is the The Coast Inn – Mersea Island Beach Huts loop from East Mersea, which conveniently starts and ends near a pub, making it perfect for a post-hike refreshment.
The Blackwater Estuary and surrounding salt marshes are a haven for birdlife. Keep an eye out for wading birds like redshanks and lapwings, as well as migratory species such as brent geese. The area is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, so you're in a prime location for birdwatching, especially at Cudmore Grove Country Park and the East Mersea Flats Nature Reserve.
You'll find a good selection of trails to explore. There are over 20 designated hiking routes in the area, ranging from short, easy strolls along the waterfront to more challenging full-day treks around the island.
The trails here are highly rated by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the unique coastal landscape, with its expansive salt marshes and mudflats offering a sense of tranquility. The combination of seaside paths, views across the Blackwater Estuary, and the iconic, colourful beach huts are frequently mentioned as highlights.
Yes, for those seeking a challenge, there is a route that covers a significant portion of the island. The Cudmore Grove Beach – Mersea Island Beach Huts loop from West Mersea is a demanding 20.4 km (12.7 mi) hike that takes you around much of the island's coastline, offering a comprehensive tour of its varied landscapes.
Walking along the Strood Channel provides classic estuary views. You'll see numerous houseboats and fishing vessels moored in the channel, with the mainland visible across the water. The path here is part of the area's network of sea wall defences and offers a flat, easy-going surface for a walk.
Yes, several trails incorporate the historic 'Old City' area. The Old Wooden Wharf – View of Mersea Island Marina loop from West Mersea is a great choice. This walk takes you through the heart of the old fishing village, past traditional weatherboard houses, the marina, and along the waterfront where the oyster packing sheds are located.
The tides are a crucial factor for any visit. Mersea Island is connected to the mainland by a causeway called The Strood, which floods at high tide, making the island temporarily inaccessible by car. Always check the tide times before you travel to and from the island to avoid getting cut off. The footpaths themselves are mostly on higher ground or sea walls, but coastal access can be affected.
For classic coastal scenery, head to West Mersea Beach, where you can walk along the esplanade with views of the iconic, colourful beach huts. For more rugged, natural views, the trails within Cudmore Grove Country Park offer panoramic vistas where the Colne and Blackwater estuaries meet.
