Managed by the National Trust, the Crom Estate is a large nature reserve of woodlands, lake, castle ruins and islands. It is an important habitat for pine martens, bats, deer, red squirrels and butterflies. There is a coffee shop at the estate and if you fancy something different you can hire a boat to explore the lough. The Crom Castle estate boathouse sits on the shore of Lough Erne below the main castle. The views out on onto the water from the boathouse are splendid, the perfect spot to pull up a picnic blanket and enjoy some relaxation.

Built on the shores of Upper Lough Erne, Crom Castle is a stunning country estate dating back to the 17th century. The beautiful castle is set amongst 2,000 acres (809 ha) of ancient woodland and countryside which make up one of Ireland's most important conservation areas. The surrounding wetlands, grasslands and woodlands are home to a wide variety of wildlife such as deer, wagtails, and cows who have been seen to swim across the lake to graze on the islands. The castle is privately owned by the Crichton family, but is open to visitors and managed by the National Trust. There's a tearoom on-site for a cuppa and a slice of cake too.

Set on the shores of Upper Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, Crom is one of Ireland's most important nature conservation areas. Wild deer, pine marten, red squirrels and many rare species including butterflies can all be found on the estate. Also inhabiting the surrounding area are all eight species of native bats and an outstanding array of rare lichens. The 2,000 acre demesne contains ancient woodland, tranquil islands, estate cottages and Old Crom Castle, all linked by the breathtakingly beautiful landscape designed by W.S.Gilpin in the 19th century. Yes, the area is well-suited for loop walks. For a shorter, accessible route, the Crom Estate loop is a great option that takes you through the historic grounds in about an hour. Many trails in the region, including those on Knocknarea, are designed as loops.
Most trails directly around the Crom Estate feature gentle, well-maintained paths, often flat with minimal elevation, making them very accessible. Hikes in the wider Sligo area, such as the Queen Maeve Trail on Knocknarea, involve more varied terrain, including gravel paths, wooden bog bridges, and steeper, more rugged sections as you gain height.
Absolutely. The trails within the Crom Estate are generally flat and easy, making them perfect for a family outing. For a different setting, Hazelwood Forest is a popular favorite with families, offering stunning scenery and clean, well-kept paths that are peaceful and suitable for all ages.
Dogs are often welcome on public trails, but they should be kept on a lead, especially near farmland with livestock and in sensitive wildlife areas like Culleenamore Strand. Always check local signage at trailheads for specific rules, as restrictions can apply, particularly within the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery complex itself.
For hikes on the Cúil Íorra Peninsula, there are dedicated car parks for the Queen Maeve Trail leading up Knocknarea. The Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery also has its own visitor parking. For other local trails, such as the one to the Devil's Chimney waterfall, there is typically roadside parking available, though it can be limited during peak times.
Hiking is possible year-round, but the best conditions are typically from late spring to early autumn (May to September) when the weather is milder and daylight hours are longer. This is also the best time to appreciate the panoramic views from Knocknarea. Always be prepared for changing Irish weather, regardless of the season.
Yes, a visit to the Devil's Chimney (Sruth in Aghaidh an Aird) is highly recommended. It's Ireland's tallest waterfall, and the trail to reach it is a pleasant walk through native woodland. The waterfall is most impressive after rainfall and is known for the unique phenomenon where strong winds can blow the water upwards, giving it its name.
The difficulty varies. The hikes within the Crom Estate, such as the Crom Castle – Crom Castle Boathouse loop from Newtownbutler, are rated as easy. For a more challenging trek, the ascent of Knocknarea via the Queen Maeve Trail involves a significant climb to 327 meters, rewarding hikers with spectacular views.
Sturdy walking shoes or boots are essential, especially for the uneven terrain on Knocknarea. Waterproof clothing is a must, as the weather can change quickly. Also, bring water, snacks, a fully charged phone, and a map. Even on shorter walks, it's wise to be prepared.
Yes, there are several options for shorter walks. The Whiskered Bat Nature Trail – Killyfole Lough loop from Magheraveely is a very short walk of about 2.3 km, perfect for a quick stroll to enjoy nature. The walk through the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery itself is also a relatively short but fascinating experience.
The routes in this area are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Hikers often praise the combination of rich history, accessible estate trails, and the stunning lakeside scenery along Lough Erne.
